Weekly Challenge #308

Happy Monday all!

So last week Chewie had a tummy bug which put him out of commission for the whole weekend... and early Tuesday morning i woke up feeling a bit off... and then i spent the rest of the night sick.  It was awful!  I didn't want to wake up the fam so i decided to sleep downstairs on the couch next to the bathroom.  It was a very rough night for me.

Around 5:30 B-rad came downstairs to find me huddled in the fetal position - so sick.  I haven't had a stomach bug in over 10 years, so it was probably my time.  So B-rad went about the task of getting the boys up for school and getting them dressed, and fed, and their lunches made and their backpacks packed, and himself readied and fed.  It was no small feat, he was slightly out of his element, but he was given no warning and therefore no prep.  He did a really great job though.  To be fair, if i woke up one morning and discovered that i had to do his job without any warning, i'm not so sure how great i'd be.

So i spent the entire day on the couch drifting in and out of sleep, and by bedtime i was able to eat a few saltine crackers and keep them down.

the next day i was feeling so much better.  Like a new person.  it was insane.

Which was really great because B-rad and I had tickets to see Mother Mother that night and i really wanted to go.  SO i took it easy all morning after the kids were in school, and drank bottled water at the concert and felt great.  And seriously, the concert was so so so good.  They are a solid live band with excellent arrangements and the sound is so awesome!!

Mother Mother

Mother and Father
On Thursday Artoo lost his front tooth and so we were trying to teach him how to sing All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth - but he was havin' none of that because it's not Christmas time.

But it WAS Saint Patrick's Day! So they let me take their pictures and put the Leprechaun filters on them in Snapchat
Here is Patty O'Lantern

and Patty O'Furniture
By the weekend with the warm temperatures our backyard looked like this:

So flooded.  Behold: Lake Harmzway

Apparently the drainage down the catwalk is blocked so everyone's backyards look the same.

OH! AND i got to see Beauty and the Beast this weekend for a friend's birthday - and it did not disappoint.  It made my 12 year old heart so happy.

Weekly Challenge #308: "MacNCheese"
So this week on the zentangle blog Rick and Maria wrote about comfort tangles and going back to the basics.  It really hit home with me because i often feel a lot of pressure to come up with something exciting and NEW each week.... instead of remembering the reason i started this blog in the first place - which was as a place of inspiration and a place of motivation.

There are eleventy-billion named tangles and named variations of tangles out there.  And there are more and more being posted each day.  It's so hard to keep up, and sometimes the more complex they are the more stressful they become because there's more opportunities for"doing it wrong".

Sometimes you just want to relax and let your pen dance across the page, and do what flows naturally from you.

Maria writes:Where is it written that we must constantly strive for more complex and focused tangles? There is something to be said for tried and true, simple and familiar . . . like "mac & cheese" vs. the latest recipe on a food blog

So i thought a great challenge would be to use your MacNCheese (or Kraft Dinner as we call it in Canada) tangles.  No pressure! Enjoy the process, love each moment.  Do the ones that feel great.

My Go to MacNCheese tangles are generally Tripoli or Flux... But as i was getting myself centered to create my tile, i realized there's an unsung hero in my tangle practice.  a tangle that often finds its way onto my tiles - and that's Betweed.

So here's my current MacNCheese tangle Betweed.  I did it as a monotangle on a tan tile, because i had a tan tile next to me, and because i liked how this looked.   You do not have to make it a monotangle, and you don't have to use a tan tile!  Unless you want to and that feels good to you.

What are your go-to tangles?  Looking forward to seeing the results!

have a great week!

Weekly Challenge #307

Happy Monday All!

I feel like we've been just getting through day to day around here.  We're knee deep in Second Winter right now with temperatures around -32C (about -25F) - which makes it hard to believe that just a few weeks ago we had temperatures around + 12 C (about 53F).  Temps like that make me want to hide inside, or go to the mall...

A boy and his dad
Chewie has been having a really great time league bowling, and last week he was awarded Bowler of the Week and Bowler of the month for January!  His auntie Mel gave him a set of bowling balls of his very own, and so now he feels very professional.  (He plays 5 pin)

look at those eyes
Artoo has been working hard on a research project at school - and was very happy to show me the fruits of his labours!  In the hallway outside his classroom is his report on Deer.  He's so proud, and so am i!!
Smarty!
It feels like everything is just getting back to normal again, and then someone gets sick.  This time it was Chewie - who caught a tummy bug and was out all weekend... and so there was much laundry and cleaning and disinfecting around here.

Sometimes when you're not feeling good you just need to snuggle up in a cuddly blanket
By Sunday he was feeling much better, and he helped me make supper - we made teriyaki stir fry and he helped me chop the vegetables, and make the sauce and cook the rice.  He did great.  He's come a long way from boiling hot dogs.  :)

he has all the prouds
We are all really looking forward to nicer weather and less yucky sick feelings.

Weekly Challenge #307: "Kitchen Table Tangles with Indy and Mazzy"
If you haven't had a chance to yet, you should totally read this post by Molly on the zentangle blog.  (Coincidentally the post was published on my mama's birthday)

at the end of the blog post we are treated to a Kitchen Table Tangles video - starring Molly's kids Indy and Mazzy.

you can watch it here!

It's so fun to watch these two little girls create with such confidence!! Watching Mazzy draw lines made me feel bolder,  Take a watch and follow along because this week's challenge is to draw their tangle ZINGO

Here's my tile! I hope you like it Indy and Mazzy! Thanks for being such GREAT teachers!!

So pretty! (I used a green sakura golddust gel pen on my tile) #zingo

Weekly Challenge #306

Hey all,

So i've been struggling with my computer and my internet for a very long time trying to get this post off the ground.  And in the interest of not going completely batshit crazy, i'm just going to jump straight in to the challenge this week, because for whatever reason - photos will NOT load today.

Grrrrr (and all the grown up curse words i don't use when the kids are awake)

Weekly Challenge #306: UMT Amphora by ZenLilyMoon

For those of you who are new, the first Monday of every month is a Use My Tangle Challenge, where the challenge of the week is to use a tangle created by one of you!  If you have a tangle you'd like to submit you can add it here and be sure that it follows the guidelines for submission.

This month's UMT is Amphora by ZenLilyMoon and you can see the step outs here

It's quite a lovely delicate looking tangle, and i really enjoyed it!  I will try my darndest to post my tile, maybe my internet won't be so temperamental tomorrow.  UPDATE!! I was able to get my tile up this morning... i'm not going to mess around too much with this post because i don't want to jinx anything.  ;)

have a great week!

Weekly Challenge #305

Happy Monday all

It's been a long week here at Casa Diva.  Chewie has been sick almost all week, and even know - though he's feeling better, he's still quite hoarse.  And Artoo has had off and on fevers all week.  Perfect timing for them both to be sick, as they were both home from school all week for February Break.

Keeping them occupied was sometimes challenging - as well as keeping spirits high.

Artoo spent the better part of an hour playing with kinetic sand
With my boys both feeling under the weather, there was much mama cuddling - which i loved.

Check this lady out!
Chewie and Artoo had the great idea to go camping in our basement, so they built a fort - with much trial and error helping from me (B-rad is so much better at this type of thing) - they made it cozy with some pillows and blankets, and brought in some battery operated candles for 'fire' and read books inside.  It was awesome.

Come on in!
One morning when Chewie was feeling better the boys made me breakfast.  I was treated to orange slices and toast with peanut butter and a glass of water "because we don't know how to make coffee"

It was the tastiest toast with orange slices and water a girl could ask for.

By the end of the week Artoo was feeling sick, and i walked into the kitchen to find this....

please excuse my unswept floor

a boy sleeping on the kitchen floor.  That was the first sign he wasn't feeling great.  SO i gently woke him up and asked him if he thought it might be a better idea to have a little sleep in his warm and cozy bed on his soft pillow than on the cold and hard kitchen floor.  He agreed and so we went up stairs for a little lay down.  poor dude.  he stopped napping by 2 years old, so it's really telling on how he's feeling when he's willing to have a nap.

Two giggly boys
But by Sunday night the boys seemed to be feeling a little better - and i am now the one with the sore throat and the headache.  :(
Art time with Mama makes everyone happy - Artoo, my little Art Journaler
So here's hoping that i stay healthy and don't get too sick - i'm downing cup after cup of tea, and upping my intake of vitamin C....

Weekly Challenge #305: "DuoTangle Marasu vs Molygon"
This week's challenge is a Duotangle!! these challenges are truly my faves.  I'm always so impressed with the new and exciting ways you make the tangles interact with each other!!

If you're new here, a Duotangle is the term i coined here on this blog to refer to a tile or piece using ONLY TWO SPECIFIC TANGLES.

This particular duotangle challenge is to use the two tangles Marasu and Molygon in your tile.

Marasu is one of the original 102 Tangles that were around back when i was getting my training at CZT #3 in 2010.  I'm not even sure how many official tangles there are now, but i think it's someone past 150? Someone fill us in below in the comments if you know.

Anyway, I hadn't really ever used Marasu until Maria demonstrated it at CZT#15 - and i fell i love with it.  If you follow the zentangle blog you may have noticed that Marasu was one of the tangles used in the 12 Days of 3Zs series they did back in December.  And lucky us, they also shared the step outs for Marasu which you can find here

The second tangle to use in your tile is Molygon.  You can find the step outs for Molygon here

This is my contribution.

This tile gives me mixed feelings.  But staying true to my own self imposed challenge to post the first tile i make for each week, here it is.

I used a renaissance zendala tile that i had already added a gold watercolour wash to.  (It's hard to see in the photo, but it's quite shiny).  My past experience with tangling on this particular type or water colour was that my 01 micron were not a fan.  i KNOW i have a 05 micron somwhere in my house, but i couldn't find it, so i did my tile with a 08 which made my lines feel bulky and thick -  I really feel that the design in my head got lost in the translation somewhat.  SO, aesthetically, i don't really care for this tile at all.  HOWEVER

While i tangled this - i had a pounding headache, and my throat felt a bit like i was swallowing shards of glass, and as i focused on the molygons growing out of each other i really began to relax and to feel a tiny bit better.  SO.  therapeutically, i love this tile.

I have found, in my experience, that the tiles that make me bliss out the most aren't usually my 'best work' but that's totally cool - because sometimes it's good to remember that it's about the process, not the product.

Have fun with this week's challenge.
have a great week.

And if you're on the Zentangle Mosaic App or Instagram - i'm @iamthediva - come on by and follow me, and i'm going to be using hashtags on the app for each of my weekly challenges. Weekly Challenge #304

Good Tuesday morning all!

I hope you all had a nice long weekend, if you were lucky enough to have one.  Here in Saskatchewan we were celebrating Family Day.

The boys' home made valentines from last week were a great success.  Chewie hand stamped and then hand wrote a card for each of the kids in his class.  It was perfect, his design was so simple and the sentiment was his.  What a creative kid.

Artoo opted to make one giant multicoloured masterpiece and then we cut it down into ATC sized cards for his classmates.  They were a big hit at the valentine's day party in his school.

B-rad surprised me with pink roses and a funny card - he totally gets me.

Artoo had his first big dentist appointment in years, and i was super stressed out about it because the last trip to the dentist was so traumatic for him (and for me).  But he was amazing, and he cooperated with the dentist and she was even able to get his dental xrays done!! unbelievable.

His teeth were clean and healthy, so we celebrated with a giant chocolate chip cookie, as you do.

such a happy boy
As i mentioned before, yesterday was Family Day here in Saskatchewan - but we didn't do much this weekend because poor little Chewie started running a fever and complaining of being tired and having a sore throat on Saturday afternoon.  By Sunday he was worse and Artoo started feeling warm as well.  By Monday he was on antibiotics....  and he's pretty bummed out about being sick - The boys both start a week holiday from school this week.

waiting for the doctor
But yesterday the boys wanted to make a craft - so we got out some paper, paint, and scissors and we made these awesome snakes.  The boys had fun playing with their snakes until lunchtime.

Weekly Challenge #304: "New Official Tangle Waybop"
You may have seen this tangle out and about in the internets lately.  Back in November, Zentangle HQ released a few new tangles at their CZT Retreat ZenAgain.  Well, on Valentine's Day the latest Zentangle Newsletter came out with the Step-outs for the new tangle Waybop.

Find the newsletter and see the step outs HERE

Here's my contribution

Have fun with this tangle! It's so elegant and there's so much room for playing here.

have a great week!

Weekly Challenge #303

Happy Monday all!

This week marked my lovely mother in law's 65th birthday, so to celebrate we all went out for dinner!

B-rad's brothers and their wives... the family resemblance is strong, no?
Practically every ordered scallops or mushrooms neptune, or lobster.... and as i'm allergic to shellfish i was secluded in the corner... and my brother in law joked to the waitress that as an appetizer i would be having a piece of cheese on a saltine cracker.

Then the waitress brought me this:

crumbled blue cheese on saltines = the best appetizer evahhh??  yes.  yes it was.
It was a great night and we all had a wonderful time - including a video from the boys singing happy birthday

Artoo had an eye appointment this week, a fairly intensive one - and he did remarkably well.  It was essentially a 4 hour appointment and he was happy and cheerful.  i snapped this cute picture of him in his appointment
totally cute
how was your week?

Weekly Challenge #303: "Valentangle"
This week's challenge is pretty straight forward: To create a valentine's themed tile or card, and as an added bonus - give it away to someone you love!  Your spouse, your child, your cat, your mailman, anyone!  Who doesn't love handmaid cards?

I tried to give my card to B-rad, but Artoo asked: "Is that for me too?" how could i say no?

To colour my tile i used a few red and pink markers and used the Hefty Hack technique
I did my tangling with a red sakura pigma micron and a white gelly roll pen
for the lettering i used a dip pen and some fountain pen ink
SPOILER: I couldn't.

Have a wonderful week, and a Happy Valentine's day!!

have a great week!

Weekly Challenge #302

Happy Monday all!

Our week started off on a bit of a downer as Artoo was home sick from school both Monday and Tuesday.  The only upside of this is that Artoo seems to be handling colds better now and we are able to manage them from home without a visit to the hospital.  Small Victories!  (Well, that's actually kind of a huge one, to be honest)

He was happy to be back at school on Wednesday, except by wednesday i had started to feel kinda crummy, so i spent a lot of the week resting up while the kids were in school because we had a big weekend planned!

Chewie and his friend E have been bowling in a league since September, and back in November they won first place in local tournament qualifying them for Provincials!  So, this weekend we drove down to Regina for the Provincial Masters Bantam Tournament.

he's drawing in his sketchbook!!! chip off the old block. ;)
His tournament was on Sunday afternoon so we went down Saturday morning, met some friends for lunch then took the boys to the Science Centre - which they loved.

Artoo and Anty

Chewlie and the Ankylosaurus
The Science Centre was fun and full of lots of hands on activities for the boys.  I loved the bubble area.

BUBBBBBLES
We also like the light area - there was a pretty cool wall where you stand in front of it and a light flashes and takes a shadow picture.  We all made as silly positions as we could think of, however they don't photograph well. lol.

artoo learning about colour and light
Of course, what kind of science centre doesn't have a ball that makes your feel like a Mad Scientist?

I can make the lightning DO MY BIDDING
And Artoo loved the infinity mirrors.  We had fun dancing and singing and waving at all the other Moms and Artoos in the mirrors

thumbs up.
It was a super fun way to spend the afternoon.
in the mouth of a megalodon shark
Science is so fun and cool and stuff.

The rest of the afternoon and evening was spent at the waterslide park in the hotel - where Artoo braved the super fast waterslide, even though he was scared.  He decided he was NOT a fan of the waterslides, and much preferred to swim in the pool or play in the spray park.

Chewie, on the other hand, was off on the slides the second we got there.  We had an adjoining room with his bowling partner's family (they're close friends of ours since high school) so he and Miss E were off like a flash.

I dunno, the guy on the other side of this hotel door looks mighty suspicious....
And even though it was a long day with science and waterslides and staying up late and eating too much sugar, they both played awesome the next day for the tournament.  They played 4 games and Chewie was bowling well above his average.  There were a few bouts of the 'grumpies' towards the end, but all in all they did really great and came in 4th place out of 24.

Miss E and Chewie and their Master bowler Julie,
who is a Canadian 5 pin bowling champion
All in all it was a really great weekend, i'm super proud of him.  I hope he continues bowling because he seems to enjoy it.

Weekly Challenge #302: "UMT Hamadox by Diana Schreur CZT"
For those of you who are new, the first Monday of every month is a Use My Tangle Challenge, where the challenge of the week is to use a tangle created by one of you!  If you have a tangle you'd like to submit you can add it here and be sure that it follows the guidelines for submission.

This month's UMT is Hamadox by Diana Schruer, and you can see the step outs here - This should be an easy one, seeing as wee're all warmed up with last week's Paradox duotangle. I had been seeing this tangle being used in the Mosaic app for a while, and i didn't know how to do it, but i love how it looks.  So i'm super excited to see it come up this week.

Here's my take on it:

have a great week!
